The Internet’s Major Service


The internet acts carrier for several different services, each with its own disinters features (see Figure 8A.5). The most commonly used internet service is given below:

1.    The World Wide Web.
2.    Electronic mail.
3.    News.
4.    File Transfer Protocol.
5.    Chat.
6.    Instant messaging.
7.    Online service.
8.    Peer-to-per service.

To use any of this service, you need a computer that is connected to the internet in some way. Most individual users connected their computers modem to a telephone line (or use a high-speed connection such as DSL or a cable modem) and set up an account with an internet service provider (ISP), a company that provides internet through access school to the internet backbone. Many other users connect to the internet through a school or business network.
