Intel Processors

Intel is historically the leading provider of chips for PCs. In 1971, Intel invented the microprocessor – the so- called computer on a chip –with the 4004 model (see Figure 4B.3). This invention led to the first microcomputer that began appearing in 1975. Even so, Intel’s success in this market was first IBM PC, which was based on an Intel microprocessor.

A list of current Intel chips (see Figure 4B.4), along with their clock speeds and numbers of transforms, is shown in Tables 4B.1.

Advanced Micro Device (AMD) Processor

In 1998, Advanced Micro Device (AMD) emerged as primary computers to Intel’s dominance in the IBM –compatible PC market. Until that time, AMD processor were typically found in lowers performance, low-priced home and small business computer selling for less than $1000. With the released for the K6 and Athlon processor series, AMD proved that it could compete features with many of Intel’s best best- selling produced. AMD even began a new race for the faster PC processor.

A list of current AMD chips (see Figure 4B.5), a long with their clock speeds and numbers of transistors, is show in Table 4B.2.
